Prophetic words have the power to change a person’s destiny and future. As well as bring change in a city and a nation.

Prophetic words have the power to birth new ministries, and bring emotionally and physically healing. Prophecy can bring unbelievers to Christ.

During an outreach at a local mall I prophesied over a store manager who asked me several time who had sent me. My only answer was Jesus sent me which he found hard to accept. His curiosity was satisfied once the prophecy revealed his heart’s desire for business and entrepreneurship. Details that I could not have known about him spoke life into his circumstances. God is in the details of our lives and the store manager needed to hear that his dreams were not forgotten.

What is the gift of prophesy? Well, it is the spiritual ability to discern and interpret the will and purpose of God.

Apostle Paul encouraged us in 1st Corinthians 14:1 that “Love should be your guide. Be eager to have the gifts that come from the Holy Spirit, especially the gift of prophecy”

There was a strong tendency at Corinth to magnify the use of tongues which the assembly could not understand. The Apostle says that it is far better to be able to encourage and speak to the edification of the hearers.

He who prophesies edifies the church. Who is the church? We are! Prophecy builds up everyone.

Paul makes it clear in 1st Corinthians 14:40 that the gifts of the Spirit should function and be expressed in a fitting and orderly way.

Timothy reminds us to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you which is Christ in us. He is the ultimate gift!

Paul says that prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

Edification is “building up.” A word of prophecy will build someone up, not tear them down.

Exhortation is encouragement. A word of prophecy will encourage someone, not discourage them.

Comfort has the idea of not only consoling, but also strengthening. A word of prophecy will strengthen, not weaken someone.

On a last note, Joel 2:28–29 seems to be taking on an especially timely relevance today as God is pouring out His Spirit on all flesh and many “sons and daughters” are prophesying and having dreams. I inspire you to step out in faith and encourage, uplift and comfort those in your sphere of influence. Whether you are a stay at home mom, a student of corporate exec we are all called to minister and further the kingdom of God. Step into your calling and start prophesying.

Next time we will have a look at the differences between old and New Testament prophets, and the way we receive revelation. Today’s New Testament prophetic ministry is quite different to what it was in the Old Testament.

Until next time, keep prophesying.

Be blessed.
