Posture yourself to hear the voice of God. You will not hear if you are doing all the talking.

Many years ago our family were getting ready to immigrate to America. At the time there were many unanswered questions and I found myself saying that I said I wish the Lord would show me a billboard or send me a sms to with all the answers we needed.

A few days later many questions were answered in the form of a news report on television. Our destination had been hit by devastating wild fires, there was literally nothing left for us to move to.

As that door closed another door opened.

When we were waiting on confirmation on moving or not it felt like the Lord was not speaking at all when He was speaking. We were feeling desperate, we were running out of time and we had schedules to keep. Everything around us became complicated. Long term planning could not be made, our children’s participation in school and their activities could not be finalised. Work schedules were on hold and it felt like we were in limbo. Instead of resting in Him I tried to control a situation that was out of my control.

In 1 Kings 19 we read the story of a powerful wind that tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

The Lord spoke in a still small voice. At the time Elijah was hiding in a cave He had endured an emotional high at calling fire down from heaven and defeating the Baal prophets but experienced an emotional low and fled to a cave. He was a high level prophet with manifestations of miracles, healings, signs and wonders. The wind, earthquake and fire were external influences that were out of his control. It must have been scary to endure rocks falling, rumblings and shakings of an earthquake, or the crackle of fire. We often go through issues of life that are tough, some even life threatening and out of our control. External forces come against us or situations that challenges our faith. These events are noisy and distract us from the plans and purposes of God over our life.

The voice of God could not be heard in the noise but in the stillness. During the noise and distractions we stand, put on the Full armour of God and trust in the God of Hope.

Some people hear the audible voice of God but most receive impressions, a sense of what God is saying through scripture, dreams, visions or music. God can speak through that friend who is not a believer.

Training yourself for accuracy is an ongoing process. Ask the Lord questions then write down the answers. Ask “Lord, do you love me?” then wait for a witness, a sense of knowing… a confirmation that He does love you. By training you will become familiar with the sound of His voice, or impression, or confirming witness that you sense.

Author and Bible teacher Mark Virkler says “The still small voice of God will speak in images, words or ideas that spontaneously come to mind. We should not strive to hear His voice, just relax and be still. The spontaneous imagery will start to flow.”

But how do you know if the voice that you hear is God, yourself or the enemy? Knowing the character of God is your plumb line. That will help you discern the voice of God amongst the other voices that we hear on a daily basis. Every time you receive an impression, or a prompting measure it to your plumb line. Does it measure up to God’s character?

The best place to start is reading your Bible. God speak devotionally through scripture and bible study all the time. Meditate on a portion of scripture and ask God questions, then pondering on it some more as you receive revelation. You can ready commentaries or do in-depth study of the word in the Hebrew or Greek.

For the activation today watch the two-way journaling video I made about Habakkuk 2. I’ll place the link in the description below. For the two-way journaling activation we record the flowing pictures or thoughts coming from God. This is a great way to train hearing God’s voice by receiving impressions and visions.

Posture yourself to hear the voice of God.  Don’t do all the talking, ask questions and then wait on the Lord to respond.
